Veterans 101
What the Nation itself runs for veterans — and what is the federal government’s job.
Two systems — don’t mix them up
Navajo veterans are served by two separate systems, and candidates are often asked about both. Health care for veterans is a federal obligation — the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (the federal VA) owes veterans their earned care, and that duty is separate from Indian Health Service (IHS) and 638 health facilities. The Nation’s own services run through the Navajo Nation Veterans Administration (NNVA) — the Nation’s agency, not the federal one, despite the similar name.
What the Nation runs
The NNVA administers programs funded largely through the Veterans Trust Fund — money the Nation sets aside for veterans, supporting things like assistance payments and the veterans housing program. Chapters also have local veterans organizations that identify needs on the ground.
What the interviews keep surfacing
Candidates are asked whether the Trust Fund reaches veterans fast enough, whether the housing program actually delivers homes, and how the Nation should push the federal VA to meet its separate obligation — especially for veterans far from any VA facility. A useful lens: when a candidate promises something for veterans, ask which system they mean, and what specifically they would change in it.
